Abdominal wall hernias are increasingly becoming an area of surgical practice. We have had many advances in the last years, from new anatomical knowledge, new surgical techniques and the increasing possibility of using minimally invasive ways (videolaparoscopy and robotics). The postgraduate course in abdominal wall hernias will cover the complete formation necessary for clinical and surgical practice in the correction of abdominal wall defects. There will be 4 modules covering from anatomical concepts of the abdominal wall, main surgical techniques, inguinal, ventral, incisional, lumbar and hiatus hernia. Through modules with extensive delivery of theoretical content, interspersed with practical activities in live models, cadaver lab, use of various simulation platforms and immersion activities with monitoring and Hands on practice in cases in the operating room accompanied by professors who are expert surgeons in abdominal wall and major references in the area.
The participant will be able to perform and master the techniques of abdominal wall hernia surgery by laparoscopy, perform small, medium, and high complexity procedures in this area, develop as a responsible professional in the use of new technologies, and be recognized in the market according to the development of specific skills.
To enable the medical professional to apply the minimally invasive technique in abdominal wall hernia surgery.
To provide the surgeon with continuing medical education, covering the latest issues in the area of interest.
To train surgeons, with basics of minimally invasive technique, in more complex procedures.
The student will be thoroughly exposed to minimally invasive, safe and technically rigorous abdominal wall hernia surgery
Complete theoretical content necessary to work with abdominal wall hernias.
Modular program encompassing: theory, hands on practice on live model, cadaver lab, and simulation platforms.
Hands on activity in the operating room accompanied by great experts of the abdominal wall
Access to minimally invasive platforms (laparoscopy and robotics) and their applications on the abdominal wall.
Training with Lato sensu certification woven by MEC.

Module 5 - supervised on-site internship
Compulsory internship in surgical centers of hospitals in Curitiba, Porto Alegre and Blumenau, accompanying the clinical and surgical activities of the course's faculty, during a period of two weeks, according to a previously defined schedule
The training is theoretical and practical for knowledge of the operation and components of the technological platform to be used in surgery.
All face-to-face training will involve the use of:
All these steps will be accompanied by a preceptor surgeon, with extensive practical experience and consolidated knowledge in the technical area being trained.
The classes will take place as follows:
In addition to the post-graduate certificate recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC), the
student will have the opportunity to further increase his knowledge by taking the
Certification Course in Robotic Surgery - in parallel to the post-graduate course - thus investing in a complete and differentiated formation considering the most modern areas of surgery available in the market.
About robotic surgery
Robotic surgery is one of the most current advances in the field of surgery. Bringing much more than precise movements, surgeons gain 15 times greater range of vision when
compared to conventional procedures.
In Brazil alone, in the last 5 years, there has been an expressive increase of 500% in the number of registered procedures. The certification course in robotic surgery is divided into three modules:
The first module consists of online recorded and/or live theoretical classes, plus a collection of more than 12 hours of edited surgeries. Total workload: 32 hours;
The second module is carried out individually and consists of simulator training in the respective hospitals. Total workload: 40 hours;
The third module is called "in-service". It consists of practical training in the surgical center
, with a review of all theoretical/practical knowledge.
The student trains with the robot in placement of portals, docking, triangulation, exchange of forceps, and suturing on a model, among others.
It will be carried out in the surgical centers of the respective hospitals. Total workload: 3h
Surgeons can still have the specific qualification of their areas provided by the medical societies, according to each society's norms.
Composition of the modules:
Lectures
Principles of robotic surgery and current scenario of robotic surgery.
Specialties
General surgery, gynecology, urology and oncology.
Activities
Recorded surgeries.
Practice on the simulator.
Practical training in the operating room with the robot.
Cities/States in-service
The in-service can be performed in hospitals in the following cities, as scored below:
RS | Porto Alegre
SC | Blumenau
PR | Curitiba and Londrina
SP | São Paulo, Bauru and Santos
MG | Belo Horizonte
ES | Vitória
PE | Recife
PA | Belém

The verification will be through attendance control during theoretical and practical classes, and the grades through the corrections of tests, exams, and assignments applied by the teaching staff.
Complete the curricular matrix with a minimum load of 360 (three hundred and sixty) hours, containing subjects or learning activities with effective interaction in the educational process, with the respective course plan, containing objectives, program, teaching/learning methodologies, forecast of student work, assessment, and bibliography. The student must have 75% attendance in each module and an average grade of 7 (concept C).
In order to monitor the student's progress throughout the course, written tests are applied with dissertation/multiple choice questions referring to the theme of each module. During the practical activities, the monitors will evaluate the students individually, while they perform certain procedures.
